Tip for this race
All today's tips ›Quickthorn No. 9, stall 2
Tom Marquand · Hughie Morrison
✓ Top rated ✓ Course & distance winner ✓ Back from a 707-day break
Quickthorn heads this York staying contest on a rating five pounds clear of the chasing pack, on figures that make him the pick over this sort of distance on good-to-soft ground, and there is every reason to expect our selection to translate that superiority into victory here. Illinois, Al Nayyir and Amiloc all arrive on the same figure and will fight out the secondary positions, though none has the edge over our selection that would be required to reverse the assessments. Quickthorn is the selection.

Beaten out of the sights last time and returning after 64 days off, Caballo De Mar is hard to fancy on these figures, though he does hold a win two starts back and has experience of today's distance and going.

A winner four starts back and placed on two of the three runs that followed, Al Nayyir arrives with solid recent form and has run over today's trip before, but connections must be hopeful the 64-day absence has not blunted his edge under a hefty 131 lb.

Amiloc shaped with promise when second five starts back and arrives here on a good preparation of 24 days, but he remains winless in recent starts and the unseating last time out is a concern connections must overcome.

Unexposed and yet to win in recent starts, Columbus showed encouragement with a third three runs back and returns here after 20 days, carrying 131 lb; lightly raced enough to suggest there is more to come.

Winless in his last five starts and ranked seventh of eight on our figures, French Master makes it hard to build a case — yet he does bring distance and going experience to the table, and a second two starts back shows he can get competitive.

Illinois shaped with promise when winning three starts back, and his official mark of 108 is undercut by a rating of 112 that suggests he retains plenty of ability over today's trip; the risk is that he has finished fifth in each of his last two starts.

Mount Atlas arrives on the back of a win last time out and has experience of today's going, but 41 days off the track raises a fitness query and he faces seven rivals carrying 131 lb off an official mark of 112.

Quickthorn showed he retains the ability to win when it matters, landing a victory in recent starts, and he has experience over today's trip and going to call upon; the lengthy 707-day absence is the one query, but his rating of 117 marks him as the class act in this field.
